SHORT CV OF PROFESSOR SARDER ABDUN NAYEEM

Born in 1960, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Sarder A. Nayeem graduated MBBS in the year of 1985 from Dhaka Medical College, the most reputed medical college of the country. He is the eldest son of Sarder Abdul Quader and Razia Quader of village Tengarchar of Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj. 

After completing his internship in the same Dhaka Medical College Hospital he was awarded the prestigious Monbusho Scholarship from the Japanese Government and entered into the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tokyo, where he had been trained in the Department of Surgery for about 6 years and received his Ph.D. in Surgery in the year of 1993. His research was on the uses of lasers in liver surgery and he was awarded the ‘Resident Research Award’ in the specialty of General Surgery by the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Inc. in its Twelfth Annual Meeting in 1992. 

Professor Dr. Nayeem worked as one of the active members of the team led by Prof. Idezuki, which pioneered laparoscopic surgery in Japan from 1989 and eventually took the initiative and performed the first ever laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Bangladesh in December, 1991. Later, he joined the BIRDEM hospital in April, 1993 and started laparoscopic surgery regularly as the pioneer surgeon in this field in the country. 

He founded Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital (JBFH), country’s first joint-venture hospital in 1993. Presently he is serving as the Chairman of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital Ltd. and Japan Bangladesh Medical Associates and also the Managing Director of Japan Bangladesh Friendship Medical Services Ltd.

At the same time presently he is a Professor, Mnimally Invasive Surgery, in the Department of Surgery of the, in Uttara Adhunik Medical College (Bangladesh Medical College, Uttara Campus), under the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dhaka. 

Professor Dr. Nayeem is the Founder and the President of the Bangladesh chapter of "Association of Medical Doctors for Asia (AMDA)" from 1989. Furthermore, is the Managing Director of AMDA Agro Farms Ltd. 

Prof. Sarder A. Nayeem is also the Dreamer and the Founder Chairman of Dhaka Evergreen Homes, country’s first ever exclusive five-star retirement resort to be built with all modern amenities in Purbachal New City.

Professor Dr. Nayeem is a member of many national and international academic societies, which include founding and life membership of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (ELSA) from 1991, active membership of International Society of Surgeons (ISS/SIC) from 1993, life membership of the Society of Surgeons of Bangladesh (SSB), founding life membership of Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Bangladesh (SLSB), life membership of Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endosurgeons (IAGES), founding life membership of Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS) . He was nominated as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) from 1999. 

He received a prestigious ‘Award of Travel Scholarship’ of the ISS Foundation to join the 39th World Congress of Surgery of the International Society of Surgeons (ISS/SIC), Centennial Congress in 2001in Brussels, Belgium and another ‘Travel Scholarship’ for joining the 106th Japan Surgical Society Congress in March, 2006, in Tokyo, Japan.  He again received an award of ‘International Guest Scholar’ of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for the year 2006, to join its Congress in October, 2006 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Professor Sarder Nayeem also received ‘Begum Rokeya Shining Personality Award 2006’ from Narikantha Foundation, Dhaka, Bangladesh, in June, 2006. Again Received ‘Pallikabi Jashimuddin Memorial Award 2005’ given by ‘Bangladesh Lokogiti Shilpi Goshthi’ in June, 2006.


He is a co-author of two books, in the editorial board of two leading journals in Bangladesh and author and co-author of 34 scientific publications in national and international journals.

Professor Dr. Nayeem is a father of two sons and his wife Asha Islam Nayeem is an Associate Professor in the Department of History of the University of Dhaka.
